My First Steps Toward Research

As I continue exploring materials science, I have started thinking more about what research actually means.

Before learning more about research, I imagined scientists mostly discovering answers.

Now I realize research begins with questions.

Researchers ask:

Why does this happen? Can this material perform better? What changes if we modify this structure? How can we solve this problem?

Although I am still early in my STEM education, I want to learn how researchers approach these questions.

My next steps include:

reading introductory research papers learning more about materials characterization understanding experimental methods connecting with researchers and mentors

I am especially interested in learning how scientists study materials at different scales, from atomic structures to real-world engineering applications.

I hope this journal becomes a record of that process—not just the things I learn, but the questions that lead me to learn them.
