What I Learned From Designing a Bridge Component
One of my first experiences applying materials science was a bridge design project through Brown University's Materials Science and Engineering course.
The challenge was not simply designing the strongest bridge component.
The goal was to create something that was:
structurally sound cost-effective durable practical
This introduced me to an important engineering idea:
The best solution is not always the strongest solution.
Engineers have to balance multiple factors.
For a bridge component, this could include:
material strength weight manufacturing difficulty cost environmental conditions
During this project, I explored how different material choices affect performance and how engineers use scientific knowledge to make design decisions.
This experience helped me understand that materials science is not just about studying materials in isolation.
It is about solving problems.
